Insurance requirements in Arkansas

Minimum car insurance in Arkansas is divided into two categories.  Both are liability clauses, providing insurance coverage for the other vehicle and its occupants if you are in an accident and are at fault.  State law requires a minimum of $25,000 in bodily injury coverage for an individual and $50,000 in bodily injury coverage for all parties in the other car.

The other minimum liability requirement is $25,000 in property damage coverage.  This pays for damage to the other driver’s car and any fences, poles or other structures that might have been damaged.

These are only the minimum requirements in Arkansas.  Given the costs of medical treatment today as well as the price of vehicle repair or replacement, many drivers find it in their best interest to carry liability coverage that reaches well above those required by state law.

Arkansas Coverage Options

There are several optional clauses that you may want to consider.  Collision insurance pays for the damage to your car in an accident that is your fault.  While not required by the state, collision coverage is usually required by your lender if you take out a loan to buy the car.  Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your car from non-accident incidents such as theft, fire or vandalism.

Personal injury protection is coverage for your own injuries, for costs due to resulting disabilities, and death benefits.  This is another insurance option that is not required by the state, but must be excluded in writing if it is not purchased.

The same written rejection is required for uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.  This is insurance that pays for your bodily injuries and property damage in the event that you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver or a driver whose coverage will not cover your costs.  It is a policy clause in widespread use today; in Arkansas you must sign a document stating that you have chosen not to buy this coverage.
