California Car Insurance (CA)

California is one of those states where life for someone living full tilt is impossible without a car.  You can't get across town, across the bay, across the Valley, into the Sierras without wheels.  And the state says that along with the wheels, you need to have car insurance.

California Car Insurance Requirements

California law requires that every registered car be insured, regardless of who is driving it. The minimum requirement for car insurance is $15,000 in bodily injury insurance for one person, and $30,000 for all persons in an incident.  Property damage coverage must be a minimum of $5,000.

The bodily injury figures meant that your policy will pay up to $15,000 in injury-related costs for any one person in the other car.  It will pay a maximum of $30,000 for injury-related costs for all parties in that car.  The property damage liability coverage pays for damages to the car that you hit.

Insurance Coverage in California

Every insurance company in California is required to offer coverage for uninsured and underinsured drivers.  This is a part of your policy that covers your potential costs in case you are in an accident and though the other driver is at fault, is either uninsured or does not carry sufficient coverage to meet your expenses.

In addition to basic liability coverage, you may want to consider purchasing coverage to protect your own vehicle. Collision coverage helps pay for damages to your car if you are at fault in an accident. Comprehensive insurance helps pay for damages to your car that is not accident-related, such as fire or storm damage, theft, or vandalism. Both collision and comprehensive coverage are sold with a deductible payment attached.  It is in your best interest to opt for the highest deductible you think you can afford in the event of an accident.   High deductibles for these insurance components will lower your premium costs significantly. If you take out a loan to purchase your car, your lender will likely require you to purchase these coverages.

You can also purchase coverage for towing, which will pay for having your car removed from the scene of an accident.  And you can buy coverage for a rental car, which will be paid for while your car is in the shop.
