District of Columbia Car Insurance (DC)

The District of Columbia, also know as Washington, DC, is the capital city of the United States. A mere 68 square miles, DC is sandwiched between the states of Virginia and Maryland. No matter where you want to go within the District of Columbia's boundaries, there is a bus or subway line that can take you there. If riding mass transit does not appeal to you, you can get around on your own four wheels. However, if you choose to do so, you must have insurance coverage.

Washington DC Car Insurance Requirements

District of Columbia requires that every car insurance policy issued in the state cover two types of liability.  The first is for bodily injury. The minimum coverage is $25,000 for an individual and $50,000 for any one incident.  The second liability responsibility is a minimum of $10,000 for property damage.  This insurance applies to accidents where you area at fault and is meant to cover expenses for the other car and driver.

The bodily injury coverage means that your insurance company will pay up to $25,000 in injury-related expenses for any one individual in the other car, and a maximum of $50,000 in medical costs for all passengers in that car.  The property damage coverage is meant to pay for repair costs to the other car, as well as any other property that might be involved, such as fences, buildings, etc.

Additional DC Car Insurance Requirements

The District of Columbia requires that you carry coverage for uninsured motorists as well. This insurance pays for your costs if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. Usually the minimum requirements on uninsured motorist coverage are the same as in the liability clause: in this case, $25,000 and $50,000 for bodily injury and $5,000 for property damage.

Coverage Options in the District of Columbia

Optional insurance coverage is available to further protect you and your property. Collision and comprehensive insurance will pay for damage to your car. Collision will cover repair costs from an accident, after you pay a deductible. Comprehensive pays for non-accident related damage such as from fire, theft, vandalism or storms – also after the insured party pays a deductible. If you have taken out a loan to buy the car, the lender will probably require this coverage.

Also available on an optional basis is insurance to cover your towing costs in the event of an accident. If you belong to an auto club, you probably do not need it. You can buy coverage that will pay for a rental car for you to drive while your automobile is in the shop. Some car insurance companies will also make disability coverage available. Auto insurance policies are personalized purchases, tailored to your financial position and the value of your car.
