Delaware Car Insurance Requirements

In Delaware, drivers are required to carry three types of insurance.  The minimum bodily injury coverage is $15,000 for an individual, and $30,000 total for all people involved in the accident.  These minimums apply to the people in the other vehicle, should you be at fault.  Also required is a minimum of $10,000 in property damage liability, which is to cover costs of damages to the other vehicle and any other property involved, should you be at fault.

The third type of required insurance is personal injury protection (PIP).  This coverage is for injuries to you and your passengers; the minimums are the same as those for bodily injury liability.  You must carry $15,000 in PIP for an individual (either you or whomever is driving) and $30,000 for all occupants of your car.  PIP also must include $5,000 in funeral expenses.

Given the high costs of medical treatment today, many drivers carry coverage that exceeds required limits.  The same applies to the property damage clause.  Because there is no required insurance for damage to your car when you are at fault, most drivers carry collision or comprehensive coverage, which may be required by your lender if you take our a loan to purchase your vehicle.

Additional Delaware Car Insurance options

Other car insurance options in Delaware include comprehensive coverage, which protects your car against non-accident related damage such as vandalism, break-ins, fire or storm damage.   Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is optional in Delaware, though required in some states and popular just about everywhere.  This insurance covers damages and injury-related costs to you and your car in the event of a collision with an uninsured or underinsured driver who is at fault.

You can also purchase towing coverage, which is cheap but also unnecessary if you are an auto club member.  An additional option is coverage for a rental vehicle during the period that your car is in the shop.
