Guide One was founded in 1947 in Iowa "to provide insurance to churches and churchgoers." Today they offer auto and homeowner's insurance as well as annuities and income protection plans. They also sell group policies to businesses providing benefits for their employees. They are licensed to do business in all fifty states; their policies are marketed solely through agents.

The company was established to sell auto insurance to non-drinkers, based on the assumption that the sober driver is less likely to be involved in an accident and therefore a safer risk than the public in general. That requirement is in place today. In order to qualify for a Guide One car insurance policy, you must agree not to "drink and drive while impaired by alcohol."
