Hawaii is a no-fault car insurance state.  This means that your insurance provider pays the medical costs for you and your passengers.  You must carry a minimum of $10,000 in coverage for you and those in your car (called personal injury protection or PIP). This is the no-fault component of Hawaii’s car insurance requirements.  It applies only to injury-related costs, not to property damage.

In Hawaii, your car insurance must also carry a minimum of $20,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for an individual and $40,000 in bodily injury for all parties.  This liability is for the parties in the other car if you are at fault.  Also required is a minimum of $10,000 in property damage liability, to cover the costs of damages to the other party’s vehicle if you are at fault.

Optional Car Insurance Requirements in Hawaii (HI)

Optional car insurance clauses available in Hawaii include coverage for uninsured or underinsured motorists.  This portion of the policy will cover your costs for injuries if the other party either carries no insurance or carries inadequate coverage to pay for your expenses.  Your insurance agent is required to notify you of the availability of this insurance and provide you with an opportunity to decline it in writing.
