Maine Car Insurance Requirements

The state of Maine requires that every vehicle owner carry minimum liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage.  This required insurance covers medical costs and damages to the other person’s car and passengers should you be involved in an accident that is your fault.  The minimum bodily injury coverage for an individual is $50,000 and $100,000 for all persons in the car.  The property damage liability minimum is $25,000.

Also required is uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.  This insurance covers medical expenses incurred by you and your passengers in an accident where the other driver is at fault but is either uninsured or does not carry adequate coverage to cover your medical expenses.  Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage does not provide for property damage costs.

Additional Car Insurance requirements in Maine (ME)

Under Maine law, your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage limits must be equal to your basic liability limits. Thus, if you decide to purchase higher limits of liability coverage, you must also purchase matching limits of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. If you choose not to do so, you must sign a document declaring your wish to stay at the $50,000/$100,000 minimum for your uninsured/underinsured protection.

Maine law also requires medical payments insurance.  This coverage provides for medical expenses for you and your passengers regardless of who is at fault in the accident.  Claims would include any emergency room procedures, hospitalization, etc.  The minimum requirement on medical payments is $1,000 in coverage – providing another layer of protection for incurred medical costs in case of injury.
