Michigan Car insurance Requirements

Michigan is a no-fault policy state.  Their minimum insurance requirements reflect that.  You must include Personal Injury Protection (PIP) which covers injury and loss to you personally.  There must also be Property Protection Insurance (PPI) which covers up to one million dollars in damage that your car does to other people's property, and $10,000 in coverage for property damage that may occur in another state.  Finally, the policy must have a minimum of $20,000 in bodily injury coverage for the individual in the other car and $40,000 to cover bodily injury for all parties not in your car.

Additional and optional Car Insurance Coverage in Michigan

Given the high costs of medical treatment today, many drivers carry coverage that exceeds required limits. The same applies to the property damage clause. Because there is no required insurance for damage to your car when you are at fault, most drivers carry collision coverage, which covers damage to your car. If you have taken out a loan to purchase your vehicle, your lender will probably require collision coverage.

Optional insurance coverage is available to further protect you and your property. Collision and comprehensive insurance will pay for damage to your car. Collision will cover repair costs from an accident, after you pay a deductible. Comprehensive pays for non-accident related damage such as from fire, theft, vandalism or storms – also after the insured party pays a deductible. If you have taken out a loan to buy the car, the lender will probably require this coverage.

Other car insurance options include coverage for the cost of towing your vehicle, as well as insurance that pays for the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is in the shop. These are perks that you may or may not wish to pay premiums for. The critical element in assembling your car insurance policy is providing sufficient protection for you and your passengers and enough coverage to get your car back on the road if it is badly damaged.
