North Dakota Car Insurance Requirements

North Dakota requires that all vehicles registered in the state be covered with basic liability insurance. The minimum bodily injury coverage required by law is $25,000 for an individual and $50,000 per incident. Minimum property damage liability in the state is $25,000. This insurance will cover injury related costs and auto damage for the other car and passengers in an accident where you are at fault.

The state also requires that every car insurance policy include protection from uninsured and underinsured drivers. This policy clause covers injury-related costs for you and your passengers should you be in an accident with a driver who is either uninsured or whose coverage is insufficient to pay your injury-related costs. The minimum requirements for both uninsured motorists and underinsured motorists are the same as basic liability: $25,000 for an individual and $50,000 per incident.

North Dakota has a no-fault clause in its car insurance requirements. Also known as Personal Injury Protection (PIP) this insurance requirement provides that every driver carry $30,000 in PIP. This coverage pays for any medical bills and work loss that you and your passengers incur as a result of an accident, regardless of who is at fault.

Additional and Optional Coverage Options in North Dakota

Optional insurance coverage includes collision and comprehensive clauses, which pay for damage to your car. Collision covers repair costs to your car for damages resulting from an accident in which you are at fault. Comprehensive coverage pays for non-accident related damage, such as vandalism or theft, storm or fire damage. Both collision and comprehensive coverage will have deductible payments attached.

You can also buy insurance that pays for towing your vehicle in the event of an accident. Gap insurance is an option that covers any difference between the money you may owe on your car loan and the amount of damage coverage you receive if the car is totaled. One other minor rider is insurance that pays for a rental car while your damaged auto is in the shop. North Dakota law provides that your basic liability coverage applies to any rental vehicle that you have for less than thirty days - so you can waive the insurance coverage that the rental company offers.
