Pennsylvania Car Insurance (PA)

Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in Pennsylvania

The state of Pennsylvania, a no-fault state, requires a minimum of bodily injury liability coverage of $15,000 for any individual, and $30,000 minimum in bodily injury for any one accident.  This will cover expenses of the other party when you are at fault.  Pennsylvania also requires $5,000 in medical liability coverage – which covers you and your passengers, again if you are at fault.  The property damage liability minimum (for the other party's car) is $5,000.

Optional Car Insurance Requirements in Pennsylvania

There are a number of options that can be added to this minimum coverage.  Insurance covering damage to your car in an accident that is your fault - referred to in the trade as collision coverage - is not required by Pennsylvania law, but is worth consideration if your car has substantial resale value.  It may also be required by your lender if you take out a loan to purchase your car.

Another widely used type of insurance coverage is for uninsured or underinsured motorists. This coverage pays for your losses should you be involved with an uninsured or underinsured driver, or engaged in a hit-and-run accident. The state of Pennsylvania does not require motorists to purchase this type of coverage, but it is a sensible alternative to trying to personally collect on damages over and above the other party’s coverage.

Additional Car Insurance Requirements in Pennsylvania

Medical payments insurance is coverage for injury-related costs to you and your passengers, regardless of who is at fault. This coverage may or may not overlap your PIP and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. It will, however, often cover costs that are not directly related to medical treatment such as wage loss.

Most insurance companies will also offer coverage for the towing charges incurred while removing your car from an accident scene. If you are an auto club member, this type of insurance is probably unnecessary. You can also buy coverage for rental car costs for a vehicle to drive while yours is in the shop.
