What is special equipment coverage?
Special equipment coverage is an auto insurance policy add-on available to you that protects the little and not so little extras that you have 'attached or added' to your car. This includes the sound system with incredible speakers that you installed and the video system that entertains your kids on long road trips. Even things like snazzy rims and fancy headlights are covered by special equipment coverage.
Do I need special equipment insurance coverage?
Check your foundational car insurance policy first. What does it stipulate about coverage for your stereo system and other add-ons? Does it even list it at all? Most policies cover a manufacturer-installed sound system, for example, up to $2,500. This excludes your deductible. Depending on how large your deductible is, you may end up replacing the car stereo without any help from your car insurance policy.
If you own collision or comprehensive coverage, you may have coverage on custom installments. If your car stereo, or even your car, is stolen; if any custom add-ons you had installed are stolen; or if your customizations are damaged due to theft or accident, you could be out a lot of money for replacement or repairs. Every company is different, so it is essential that you add this to your list of questions to ask a potential insurance provider when you comparison shop for policy options.

Is this a common insurance policy add-on?
Yes and no. It is common enough that most insurance providers know what it is, but it is uncommon enough that you should ask to be sure that your potential provider even carries this product. Some smaller companies may stick to the more common types of coverage (no-fault, comprehensive, collision, etc.). This may be something to take into consideration, as auto insurance companies are apt to provide discounts when you purchase multiple policies or add-ons to a foundational policy. Purchasing your overarching auto insurance and special equipment coverage from the same provider is a good way to save on rates.
Is this the only way to protect my audio system?
No. There are other add-on coverages that are similar, including tape/CD coverage for your collection of music, should it be stolen. There is also sound system coverage, which covers only your stereo and would not cover any other customizations you may have made to your vehicle.
